Sénèque est un philosophe, un dramaturge et un homme d'État du premier siècle après Jésus-Christ. Il a été en charge de l'éducation de Néron, futur Empereur de Rome. Sa pensée se situe en filiation avec le Stoïcisme grec, mais la notion de système est mise à distance au profit de considérations davantage morales que métaphysiques.

È il decimo dei "Dialoghi" di Seneca, dedicato al suocero Pompeo Paolino, che aveva in quel momento l'importante incarico di prefetto dell'annona, cioè di raccolta e distribuzione del grano nell'Urbe. E proprio all'amico, oltre che parente, Seneca dà il consiglio di ritirarsi a vita privata, tralasciando ogni attività pubblica. Assumendo cioè un atteggiamento filosofico apparentemente epicureo, nonostante lo stesso Seneca fosse un esponente importante dello stoicismo romano.
