Resta in vita soltanto Agata, l'ultima figlia di Don Nuccio, che però è gravemente malata. Uno spaccato di vita contadina in cui fede e superstizione rappresentano un appiglio disperato in un mondo fatto di povertà e miseria.

Luigi Pirandello ci presenta i Siroli, coppia di anziani mezzadri siciliani costretti a una vita di miseria e sofferenza. Una quotidianità orrenda fatta di fatiche bestiali, malattia e povertà estrema, che però i due anziani sopportano nel segno di una fede cieca e assoluta. Gaetano Marino interpreta "La camera in attesa", classica novella di Pirandello incentrata sul patetismo degli affetti familiari sullo sfondo della Grande Guerra.

Pubblicata per la prima volta nell'agosto del 1915 sul Giornale di Sicilia, "Colloquii coi personaggi" è una novella in cui possiamo ascoltare lo stesso Pirandello mentre dialoga con un personaggio e con il ricordo della madre defunta. Ambientata allo scoppio della Prima Guerra Mondiale, la novella presenta un'interessante riflessione sui doveri dell'intellettuale e su quelli dell'autore.
