Short Ghost

Supernatural short story written especially for the young Anne (Nannie) Wynne. It was originally published as "The Ghost's Touch" in The Irish Fireside, 30 September-14 October 1885; Harper's Weekly, 23 October 1885; and in The Ghost's Touch and Other Stories (with "My Lady's Money" and "Percy and the Prophet", Harper's Handy Series, no. 30, 1885).

M. R. James (Montague Rhodes James) was a noted British medieval scholar and provost of King's College, Cambridge (1905-1918) and of Eton College. He is best remembered today for his ghost stories, which are widely regarded as among the finest in English literature. Our protagonist, Victoria, is a successful businesswoman. She has a history of mental illness, but that's behind her now, despite what her distant husband might say. What starts out as a normal day at the office is turned upside down by the appearance of a mysterious figure that only Victoria can see. It soon becomes clear that this being, whatever it is, is following her. As Victoria tries to make the creature go away, her demons begin to creep up on her again.
