Social Democracy

Originally published anonymously, The Federalist Papers first appeared in 1787 as a series of letters to New York newspapers exhorting voters to ratify the proposed Constitution of the United States. Still hotly debated and open to often controversial interpretations, the arguments first presented here by three of America's greatest patriots and political theorists were created during a critical moment in our nation's history.

The title of this book reflects the overarching theme which focus on the challenges facing democracy in the United States and around the world. The title also suggests the urgency and importance of these issues, highlighting the need for immediate action to address the challenges facing democracy today.

Known as the age of democracy, the 19th century witnessed the extension of the franchise and the rise of party politics. As Daniel Carpenter shows, however, democracy in America emerged not merely through elections and parties, but through the transformation of an ancient political tool: the petition. At a time when Americans are debating the future of public education, Johann N.
