Voices: Vol. 2 is the second installment of the Voices series by Black Males in Education St. Louis (BMESTL) in an attempt to project the work, accomplishments, and perspectives of Black male educators. Based on the success of Voices: Vol. 1, there is little doubt that Vol. 2 will not only be a compelling listen, but will also inspire more Black men (and women) to find their authentic voice while encouraging others to enter the field of education.

The Teacher's Attention is a fresh take on relationships in schools. Looking beyond our obsession with raising test scores, this book recognizes that education is a key partner in raising children. Garrett Delavan contends that allowing students, educators and parents to navigate a smaller number of relationships - a concept he calls "relationship load" - provides many benefits, including a better chance at achieving equal access to a good education for all children.

Over the past several years, Jonathan Kozol has visited nearly 60 public schools. Virtually everywhere, he finds that conditions have grown worse for inner-city children in the 15 years since federal courts began dismantling the landmark ruling in Brown v. Board of Education. First, a state of nearly absolute apartheid now prevails in thousands of our schools. The segregation of Black children has reverted to a level that the nation has not seen since 1968. Few of the students in these schools know White children any longer.

Over the decades, the Mastery Learning method has seen a resurgence in terms of positive research. Such a method is needed to help address the student achievement gap. Many schools are improving or adequate on their own, but a methodology that ensures that students both master material and do so using their respective motivations and learning style can best address said achievement gaps.

Following in the rich traditions in African American cooperative economic and educational thought, teacher-organizer Jay Gillen describes the Baltimore Algebra Project (BAP) as a youth-run cooperative enterprise in which young people direct their peers' and their own learning for a wage. BAP and similar enterprises are creating an educational network of empowered, employed students. Gillen argues that this is a proactive political, economic, and educational structure that builds relationships among and between students and their communities.
