Maya lives and breathes musicals. When her chance to finally be a part of the summer musical program at the community theater comes up, Maya is convinced she will get the lead. After all, who knows The Drowsy Chaperone better than she does? However, things don’t turn out exactly the way Maya’s planned, and the summer turns out to be jam-packed with problems: dealing with her best friend’s move, her parents’ busy jobs, and—since her autism diagnosis—the ongoing puzzle of how to be Maya in Public.

As a result of vaccines and various other “modern” medical topics, autism has become more common than ever. In the Dealing with Autism series, you will learn about the “root” problem autistics deal with, how to spot it, and how to teach your loved one how to overcome it. As a high-function autistic with nearly 20 years in education, I was able to create a lesson plan, which I originally designed for myself. Due to the exceptional outcome of following my own program, people no longer believe I am autistic.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurological disorder (a "brain" condition) characterized by poor behavioral and social difficulties. This is a developmental condition that starts early in infancy and lasts for life. Autism spectrum disorder affects most facets of life. Cognitive (thinking and language) and social skills are usually impaired by growth relative to their disorder-free peers.

According to statistics reported by CDC in 2020, one in 54 children in the USA were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in 2016. It is suggested that boys are four times more likely to get a diagnosis of autism than girls. Autism does not discriminate; it affects all ethnicities and socio-economic groups. Getting the diagnosis and intervention early is better, however, unfortunately, this does not happen for all families.

I have begun writing to help those who don't already understand Autism. I am very passionate about these topics because I too am on the spectrum and have spent the last 15 years of my life dedicated to working in mental health. For most of my life I just felt like I was different, weird and sometimes unwanted. I didn't understand what was keeping me in misery until I learned about Neurodiversity and how it is simply a 'Different-ability' and not about the stigma of a 'Dis-ability'.
