God Sees the Truth, But Waits is a short story by Russian author Leo Tolstoy first published in 1872. The story, about a man sent to prison for a murder he did not commit, takes the form of a parable of forgiveness. English translations were also published under titles "The Confessed Crime", "Exiled to Siberia", and "The Long Exile". The concept of the story of a man wrongfully accused of murder and banished to Siberia also appears in one of Tolstoy's previous works, War and Peace, during a philosophical discussion between two characters who relate the story and argue how the protagonist of their story deals with injustice and fate.

Moscow settings - is an exciting story by Mikhail Afanasyevich Bulgakov (1891 - 1940), an outstanding writer, playwright and theatre worker. Bulgakov was a Soviet playwright, novelist, and short story writer best known for his humor and penetrating satire. Because of their realism and humor, Bulgakov's works enjoyed great popularity, but their trenchant criticism of Soviet mores was increasingly unacceptable to the authorities.

Der Protagonist Rodion Romanowitsch Raskolnikow wird vorgestellt. Er ist ein junger sowie begabter Student, der in einfachen Verhältnissen in Sankt Petersburg lebt. Es wird deutlich, dass sein Ego ihm oftmals im Weg steht. So sieht er sich im Vergleich zu seinen Mitmenschen als überlegen an. Zudem maßt er sich an, darüber zu entscheiden, wer ein Recht auf das Leben hat und wer unwürdig ist. Aus seiner Sicht ist er zu Größerem berufen, doch steht die Armut diesem Aufstieg im Weg. Der daraus entstehende innere Konflikt sorgt dafür, dass er sich als Einzelgänger durch die Welt bewegt.

Luschin macht es noch immer zu schaffen, dass Dunja ihm eine Abfuhr erteilt hat. Er streitet sich mit seinem früheren Mündel Lebestjanikow, bei welchem er nun wohnt. Thema des Streits ist primär Sonja, die Lebestjanikow in eine Kommune locken möchte, um diese dort zu entwickeln. Luschin holt Sonja hinzu, weil er vorgeblich etwas Gutes für die Witwe Marmeladow tun möchte. Luschin überreicht Sonja zehn Rubel und möchte sich am Abend mit ihr treffen.

Raskolnikow sorgt sich zunehmend um die bevorstehende Hochzeit seiner Schwester. Er unterstreicht in Anwesenheit der Mutter, dass Dunja die Verlobung mit Luschin auflösen muss. Weitere Gewissensbisse aufgrund der Morde werden spürbar, weshalb er Mutter und Schwester fortschickt, um allein zu sein. Rasumichin soll die beiden in ihr Hotel bringen. Dunja scheint ihm zu gefallen. Anschließend begleitet er den Arzt erneut zu Raskolnikow, um nach diesem zu sehen.

Raskolnikow möchte Swidrigajlow wegschicken, doch dieser wehrt sich und äußert zunächst unklare Aussagen. Er sei der Mann Dunjas verstorbener, ehemaliger Arbeitgeberin und ein früherer Falschspieler. Seine Frau habe ihn einst aus dem Gefängnis freigekauft. Nun möchte er Dunjas Hochzeit verhindern, da er selbst Gefühle für diese hegt. Auch möchte er sie mit 10.000 Rubel entschädigen und ihr zudem 3.000 Rubel übergeben, die seine Frau Dunja vermacht hatte.

Seit anderthalb Jahren ist Raskolnikow mittlerweile in Sibirien in Haft. Ein Rückblick zeigt, dass er zu acht Jahren Zwangsarbeit aufgrund mildernder Umstände verurteilt wurde. Dunja hat mittlerweile Rasumichin geheiratet, doch ist seine Mutter in der Zwischenzeit verstorben. Sonja hat sich entschieden, mit Raskolnikow zu gehen, lebt in der Nähe des Lagers und hält per Brief Kontakt zu Rasumichin und Dunja.

Raskolnikow befindet sich noch immer im Unklaren bezüglich vieler Ereignisse. So belastet ihn unter anderem das Verhältnis zu Swidrigajlow, der ihn näher kennenlernen möchte. Andererseits weiß er die Zuneigung Sonjas zu schätzen, wenngleich dies der einzige Lichtblick ist. Dunja erhält einen Brief, dass der vermeintliche Mörder die Tat gestanden habe. Kurz darauf erscheint Petrowitsch überraschend und bittet darum, mit Raskolnikow reden zu dürfen.

Am nächsten Tag wacht Raskolnikow mit Fieber auf. Darüber hinaus macht sich angesichts des Verbrechens der letzten Nacht Nervosität breit und er versucht, weitere Spuren zu beseitigen. Nastassja und der Hausknecht überreichen ihm eine Vorladung der Polizei. Nachdem er auf der Wache erfährt, dass es sich lediglich um eine Geldforderung seiner Vermieterin handelt, ist er zunächst beruhigt. Doch überkommt ihn das Gefühl, die Tat gestehen zu müssen. Abschließend unterhält er sich mit dem Polizisten über den mittlerweile bekanntgewordenen Mord und fragt ihn über mögliche Verdächtige aus.
