On 12th April 1981 a revolutionary new spacecraft blasted off from Florida on her maiden flight. Spaceflight is one of the greatest human achievements of the 20th century. The Soviets launched Sputnik, the first satellite, in 1957; less than 12 years later, the American Apollo astronauts landed on the moon.
