Oggi le montagne d'Italia e del mondo - le Dolomiti e il Monte Bianco, l'Everest e il K2, il Kilimanjaro e il Gran Sasso - sono soprattutto spazi di divertimento e avventura. Ma i sentieri, le pareti di roccia e di ghiaccio, le piste da sci e le vette sono solo una parte del quadro. Per millenni, in ogni angolo della terra, le montagne sono state territori di duro lavoro quotidiano, fonte di paura e luoghi eletti a culto, scenario di sfide che hanno messo alla prova le umane possibilità, oltre che teatro di guerra.

Simone Moro ripercorre vent'anni di spedizioni in Himalaya senza nascondere nulla, né le grandi soddisfazioni né le difficoltà e le rinunce. Il suo è un lungo viaggio di avvicinamento, dalle Alpi bergamasche fino in cima al sogno di raggiungere la vetta più alta della Terra. L'Everest per Simone non è solo una vetta da raggiungere, è la ragione per cui vale la pena di crescere, di camminare dal campo base alla cima, attraverso crepacci, successi, bufere improvvise, momenti di sconforto, incontri con amici veri e persone di cui è meglio non fidarsi.

A 44 anni e con 44 spedizioni alle spalle, Simone Moro - nel mezzo della sua straordinaria carriera alpinistica - ha sentito l'esigenza di raccontarsi e soprattutto di mettere a fuoco il senso di quello che lui definisce il suo sogno "quasi impossibile": la scelta di affrontare le massime vette del pianeta nella stagione più ostile, l'inverno.

Per la prima volta nella storia della letteratura di montagna, questo libro è stato scritto quasi interamente durante l'ascensione fino a oltre ottomila metri del Nanga Parbat, che Simone ha intrapreso alla fine del dicembre 2011.

Kangchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world and a notoriously difficult and dangerous mountain to climb. First climbed from the west in 1955 by a British team comprising Joe Brown, George Band, Tony Streather and Norman Hardie, it waited over 20 years for a second ascent. The third ascent, from the north, followed in 1979 by a four-man team including the visionary British alpinist Doug Scott.

In the late 1960s, MacInnes led the Glencoe Mountain Rescue team and together they developed innovative techniques and equipment in order to save lives - often risking their own in the process - whether night or day, and always at a moment’s notice. He was a central figure in the rescue during the 1963 New Year tragedy in the Cuillins on the Isle of Skye, and led groundbreaking rescues on Buichaille Etive Mor, Ben Nevis, Bidean nam Bian and many other legendary Scottish mountains.
