In this 1847 speech of Douglass to the American Anti-Slavery Society, he states that slavery is such a gigantic crime that every opportunity ought to be used to expose it. Dismissing political parties and the church as viable ways to end slavery, he gives examples of how instances of peaceful moral protest against slavery were suppressed. He defends his call for aid in England to help bring about the end of the evil practice.

On April 3, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood at the pulpit of Mason Temple in Memphis, Tennessee, and delivered what would be his final speech. Voiced in support of the Memphis Sanitation Worker’s Strike, Dr. King's words continue to be powerful and relevant as workers continue to organize, unionize, and strike across various industries today. Withstanding the test of time, this speech serves as a galvanizing call to create and maintain unity among all people.

In an untitled article in The Boston Gazette of February 27, 1769, Samuel Adams defends the right of the people of Boston to bear arms. He argues that citizens need to have a means of defending themselves and cites several instances of the military in the city having violated the rights of citizens. "Rights of the Colonists" is an essay of November 20, 1772 in which he defends the natural rights of the colonists.

The arduous task of overthrowing Jim Crow codes and legislation marked one of the first strides toward the modern struggle for ethnic equality in American society and required nearly a century of struggle. That effort spawned a multitude of heroic African American activists, but it is remembered in large part for the work of two iconic African American men of stature. Much like their later counterparts, the debate between gradual integration through temporary accommodation and overtly insistent activism was led by Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. Du Bois.

In the early 1960s, tired of reprisals for attempting to register to vote, Selma's black community began to protest. The struggle received nationwide attention when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a voting rights march in January 1965 and was attacked by a segregationist. In February, the shooting of an unarmed demonstrator by an Alabama state trooper inspired a march from Selma to the state capital of Montgomery.

One of the most notorious crimes during the Civil Rights Movement was the murder of three civil rights workers in Philadelphia, Mississippi in June 1964.
