When we hear the name Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, most people think of Sherlock Holmes, his most famous creation. However, detective stories were not Doyle's favorite. His lifelong passion was the supernatural and because of this he wrote a number of fascinationg supernatural stories. This section includes 7 of the best.

H. P. Lovecraft is arguably the most important horror writer of the 20th century. Culled from his 1927 essay "Supernatural Horror in Literature”, Lovecraft acknowledges those authors and stories that he feels are the very finest the horror field has to offer, including Washington Irving, Edgar Allan Poe, Henry James, Rudyard Kipling, Bram Stoker, Robert Louis Stevenson, Guy de Maupassant, Ambrose Bierce, and Arthur Conan Doyle. M.R. James (1862-1936) was provost of King's College, Cambridge, and Eton College. He was a highly regarded scholar and academic in his time but today is remembered for his ghost stories, which are considered among the finest in the genre. The seven stories in this Volume One are: "A School Story", "Rats", "A Warning to the Curious", "Two Doctors", "The Haunted Doll's House", "Casting the Runes", "There Was a Man Dwelt by a Churchyard".

The unifying factor of this collection is that, without exception, every author included here was in some way or another involved with or interested in the occult. In some cases, they were members of an occult organization, such as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, the Theosophical Society, or similar such groups. Others simply had a strong personal interest in the subject matter or practiced some form of the esoteric sciences in private.

The Picture of Dorian Gray uscì originariamente nel luglio del 1890 sul Lippincott's Monthly Magazine. Nell'aprile 1891 Wilde fece stampare in volume il romanzo, unendovi la propria prefazione. In questa occasione la pubblicazione originale fu ampliata con l’aggiunta di alcuni capitoli, operazione che forse appesantì l’opera, invece che migliorarla. Nei capitoli, però, in cui non accade “niente”, se non le chiacchiere di qualche salotto si ha però lo specchio di una società annoiata che è il terreno, secondo Wilde, in cui nascono i peccati, pertanto, in questo audiolibro, sono stati mantenuti.
