As command module pilot of Apollo 17, the last crewed flight to the moon, Ron Evans combined precision flying and painstaking geological observation with moments of delight and enthusiasm. As a patriotic American in charge of command module America, Evans was nicknamed “Captain America” by his fellow crew members.

Mae Jemison is a woman who has worn many hats throughout her illustrious life. She has been a chemical engineer, dancer, social worker, medical doctor, writer, and choreographer. But perhaps, she is most well-known in her role as an astronaut. On September 12, 1992, Mae joined six other people aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour for the STS-47 mission. The mission was completed successfully, and Mae became the first-ever black woman to go to space. Her life both before and after her launch into space is one that is truly worth learning about and understanding.

The year 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of Sir Ernest Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. On December 5, 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton, along with 27 men aboard the ship Endurance, departed South Georgia Island in the southern Atlantic Ocean for Vahsel Bayon the northeast coast of Antarctica with the intent of trekking across the continent. On August 20, 1916, Shackleton on the Yelcho picked up 22 men on the northeast coast of Elephant Island.
