A CNA or a certified nursing assistant is not a nurse but a well-trained direct care staff member who works under the supervision of a licensed registered nurse (RN). In some states, a licensed practical nurse or a licensed vocational nurse (LPN/LVN) can also serve as a CNA supervisor.
