For the last five years, James and Deborah Fallows have been traveling across America in a single-engine prop airplane. Early in 1815, Louisa Catherine Adams and her young son left St. Petersburg in a heavy Russian carriage and set out on a difficult journey to meet her husband, John Quincy Adams, in Paris. The RMS Titanic sailed from Southampton en route for New York on her maiden voyage with 2,228 passengers and crew on board.
