A chemistry mistress at the Girls’ Grammar School in Berebury, she was a longtime sufferer of diabetes who managed to live her modest life to a ripe old age. But one thing is odd - Beatrice Wansdyke died a very wealthy woman. What was an old schoolteacher doing with a small fortune? Meanwhile, Detective Inspector C. D. Sloan, Calleshire’s finest investigator, learns he is about to become a father. But with ominous players hell-bent on pursuing Miss Wansdyke’s money, will he live see his child’s first birthday?

The British-based Anglo-Lassertan Mineral Company finds itself in hot water its engineer, Alan Ottershaw, hits and kills a pedestrian while driving in a foreign country - a nation with thick veins of the strategically important mineral querremitte. This country has draconian laws about killings, so Ottershaw is relieved when he's whisked back to Calleshire. Bur the Lassertan government threatens to strip the company of its most valuable contract, and poor Mr. Ottershaw dies suddenly, a very convenient solution. A little too convenient, if you ask Calleshire detective C. D. Sloan.

The day gets off to a bad start for Montalbano: while trying to break up a fight on Marinella beach, he hits the wrong man and is stopped by the Carabinieri. When he finally gets to the office, the inspector learns about a strange abduction: a woman was abducted, drugged, and then released unharmed a few hours later. A few days later, the same thing happens again, but this time the woman abducted is the niece of Enzo, the owner of Montalbano's favorite trattoria. The only link between the two events is that both women are 30 years old and work in a bank.
