When you dive into Mark Twain’s The Innocents Abroad, you have to be ready to learn more about the unadorned, ungilded reality of 19th-century “touring” than you might think you want to learn. Though they were annoying.

Canadian writer Lawrence Millman has made courting adventure to unusual places his lifelong trade. In "An Evening Among Headhunters," Millman tells the story of his visit to the Jivaro Indians living along at the Equadorian border.

Daniel Zalewski's essay "Once In The Jungle" chronicles American Tobias Schneebaum, a painter turned adventurer who hitchhiked to Peru, walked into the Amazon jungle and came to live with an isolated native Indian tribe, the Arakmbut people, for seven months in 1956, and his defining moment of participating in cannibalism.

Tom Patey, one of Scotland’s foremost climbers and mountaineers, was legendary for his pioneering ascents and boundless enthusiasm, and his carefree approach and ability to burn the candle at both ends.
