The world’s discrimination and violence against women and girls is the most serious, pervasive, and ignored violation of basic human rights: This is President Jimmy Carter’s call to action. A Call to Action addresses the suffering inflicted upon women by a false interpretation of carefully selected religious texts and a growing tolerance of violence and warfare. Key verses are often omitted or quoted out of context by male religious leaders to exalt the status of men and exclude women.

Women have made great strides toward equal rights over the past 100 years, especially in the West. But when considering the ongoing fight over reproductive rights and equal pay - and the prevalence of sexual violence and domestic abuse - it is clear that a significant gap still exists. With scripture often cited as justification for the marginalization of women, it is time to acknowledge that one of the final barriers to full equality for women is religion.

Black women are the single most religious demographic in the United States, yet they are among the poorest, least educated, and least healthy groups in the nation. Drawing on the author's own past experience as an evangelical minister and her present work as a secular counselor and researcher, The Ebony Exodus Project makes a direct connection between the church and the plight of black women.

My purpose is to encourage you to study the Scriptures for yourself, for clarity and mental freedom, for spiritual discernment and wisdom. Scriptures may not use modern terms such as “self-development”, “mental wellness”, and “emotional freedom”, but that is exactly what they can be used for.

This work is designed to offer the context of the history of the woman's role in Islam from its inception, examining the conditioning of the sacred feminine over time. How deeply are the threads of religious identity sown?
