夏目漱石の代表作『吾輩は猫である』の(一)～(三)までを収録。
(一)主人の英語教師の苦沙弥先生は書斎にこもってばかりだが、勤勉とはほど遠い。涎を垂らして居眠りばかりしている。見栄っ張りの知ったかぶり。ある時、友人の美学者の迷亭が語った「高名な画家アンドレア・デル・サルト」の言葉に、なるほど彼もそう言ったか、と相槌を打ち、さっそく自身も迷亭の言うように写生を試みるのだが、それは迷亭のまったくのでまかせだった。
(二)猫の大王のような「車屋の黒」は、吾輩が鼠も捕ったことがないことを馬鹿にする。吾輩は何でも食うので気にしないが、正月、主人の残した餅に食いついた時は驚いた。もちが歯に食い込んで噛み切れない。苦しみのあまり、立ち上がって前足で取ろうとした奇妙な「猫踊り」を見つかり大笑いされてしまった。傷心を癒すには、美貌猫の三毛子と話すに限る。新参者の吾輩にお師匠さんのことを説明する「天璋院様のご祐筆の妹の…」のやりとりは傑作場面のひとつ。その三毛子を、しばらくして訪ねると、どうも様子がおかしい。どうやら三毛子は死んだらしい。戒名まで付けてもらって女師匠らに惜しまれている。彼らは、薄汚い野良猫の吾輩のせいで病気になったのだと言っている。
(三)吾輩は、世間から少し注目され始めた。苦沙弥先生は日曜日の午後、硯と原稿用紙を前に何やら唸っている。やがて迷亭が来る。寒

「吾輩は猫である」の十、十一の最終の2章を朗読。
「十」では主人の苦沙弥の寝起きの悪さの描写から始まる。娘3人が騒々しく顔を洗い学校の支度をしていても、細君が箒とはたきで音を立てながら掃除しても、布団をかぶったまま起きようとしない。裏の車屋の子供の八っちゃんが大きな声で泣き出したので、癇癪を起してやっと起きるが、それでもすぐには布団から離れない。やっと鯨の遠吠えのような声であくびをして顔を洗いに出る。次に子供3人の観察だ。無分別な振る舞いにもてあまし気味だが、絶対的放任主義で何も言わない。やがて、姪の女学生の雪江がやってきた。女二人で姦しく話す話す。保険会社の勧誘への主人の珍応答、八木独仙の婦人会での迷演説の事々。やがて泥棒がつかまって盗品を取りに警察署に行っていた主人が帰ってきて、つまらぬ説教を受ける。そして、生徒の古井武右衛門が苦悶の様子でやってきた。悪友と謀って、あの生意気な金田の娘に悪戯で艶書を送ったはいいが、出し主として自分の名前を貸してしまい、後になってその悪戯で退校になるのではないかと心配になって相談に来たものだった。しかし、苦沙弥はろくに取り合わず、そのうちやってきた寒月君と放談を始めたので、武右衛門は見切りをつけて帰っていった。
「十一」は、迷亭、独仙、東風、寒月らが集まっての碁や放談の様子である。やがて寒月が、ヴァイオリンを高等学校時代に習い

「吾輩は猫である」の七～九の三章を朗読。
「七」では、吾輩の近頃の運動を紹介する。鎌首をもたげるかまきりを相手にからかったり、蝉を取ったり、あるいは垣めぐりの最中にカラスにからかわれたりする様子を、微に入り細を穿って描写する。続いて、人間どもの衣服を競う様を馬鹿にする一方、すべての衣服を脱ぎ去って、赤裸を衆目環視のうちに露出し、談笑をほしいまましている狂態を、一大奇観として語る。
「八」では、苦沙弥先生宅の北面に隣接する落雲館中学の生徒たちとの攻防を描く。曰く、「臥竜窟苦沙弥先生と落雲館裏八百の健児との大戦争」。生徒らは、野球ボールをわざと打ち込み、無断で竹垣を越えて入り込んで、騒々しく探し回る。先生がねじ込み、以後、断わってから探すことになったら、日に十数回も大声で断りに来る。数名の来客は、先生に諭す。鈴木の藤さんは、所詮多勢に無勢、金と衆とに従いあきらめろと教え、医者の甘木先生は催眠術で神経をしずめろと助言し、そして哲学者然とした男は、消極的の精神修養で安心を得ろと説法したのだった。
「九」では、まず先生の痘痕面の由縁を説明し、鏡を見ながら長く伸ばした髪を分け、髭の手入れをする様子をおかしく語る。続いて、郵便の一端を紹介する。先生は、義捐金の呼びかけや裁縫秘術の活版購入の勧誘はうっちゃるが、趣旨不明の難解な手紙は、意味深長な哲理を反映したものとして

「吾輩は猫である」の四～六の３章を収録。四章では、近隣の金田邸に忍び込んで聞いた、金田夫婦と来客である実業家の鈴木との会話から始まる。先日、鼻子夫人が苦沙弥先生宅先生宅に、娘の婿候補である寒月君の人となりを聞きに行ったところ、迷亭とともに失敬な応対に会い、目的を果たせなかったため、今度は、苦沙弥と学生時代に同宿だった鈴木に、苦沙弥から聞き出すように依頼する。鈴木は、苦沙弥宅に立ち寄った迷亭から、寒月君が博士論文の執筆にかかっているという将来有望な話を聞き出す。そして、苦沙弥をおだてて、金田の娘との縁談に猛反対する迷亭に同調しないよう仕向ける。各人の途切れない軽妙な会話の連続が、絶妙な面白みを醸し出す…。
五章では、苦沙弥宅に深夜忍び入った泥棒に、夫婦も女中も熟睡して気が付かず、身の回りのものをごっそり持って行かれてしまった。「吾輩」は一部始終を目撃するも、ろくに注意喚起もできず、役立たずと人間どもから愚物扱いされる。そこで、鼠の一匹も捕ろうと決心するが、逆襲にあってしまった…。
六章では、苦沙弥邸に出入りする常連の連中と夫婦を交えた様々な珍妙な会話が続く。迷亭の帽子、鋏に蕎麦談義。人を食った若き日の「蛇飯」体験と「失恋」談、寒月の「俳劇」と東風の「詩作」・・・豪傑連の放談は終日続く…。
