 人よりも“気”に敏感な体質を持つ清水美空が、スカイツリー近くの葬儀場・坂東会館で働き始めて一年が経とうとしていた。若者や不慮の死を遂げた方など、誰もが避けたがる「訳あり」葬儀を好んで引き受ける葬祭ディレクター・漆原のもと、厳しい指導を受けながら、故人と遺族が最良の形でお別れできるよう、奮闘する日々を過ごしている。
　葬儀場が繁忙期を迎える真冬のある日、美空は、高校の友人・夏海と偶然再会する。はしゃぎながら近況報告をし合う二人だったが、美空が葬儀場で働いていることを聞いた夏海は一転、強張った表情で美空に問う……「遺体がなくても、お葬式ってできるの？」。夏海の兄は、海に出たまま五年以上も行方不明だった。家族の時間も止まってしまっているという。
　交通事故に遭った高校生、自殺した高齢女性、妻と幼い息子二人を遺し病死した男性、電車に飛び込んだ社会人一年目の女性……それぞれの「お別れ」に涙が止まらない、あたたかなお葬式小説。
