ロシアの金持ちの農民の家にシモン、タラス、イワンの三人の息子と耳も口も不自由なマルタという娘がいた。
長兄のシモンは家を出てえらい軍人になった。次兄のタラスも家を出て裕福な商人になった。三男のイワンは、家に残って、年寄りの両親と妹を養うために畑を耕して、一生懸命働いた。
やがて、家を出て行った二人の兄は、勝手にも親の財産を分けてくれと言ってきた。しかし、イワンは嫌な顔ひとつせず、気持ちよく兄達二人に財産を分けてやる。
これを見ていた悪魔は面白くない。悪魔はイワンたち兄弟が喧嘩をするところが見たかった。悪魔は人間の不幸が大好物なのだ。
悪魔たちはイワンたち兄弟を、落ちぶれさせて喧嘩をさせる為に誘惑する。二人の兄は落ちぶれるが、しかし、イワンは悪魔の誘惑にちっとも乗らず働き続ける。
