＜あらすじ＞
船大工の鉄次は子供が好きだった。博打で御用になって六十日あまりの牢に入っていた父親の代わりに、近くに住む長吉を可愛がっていた。
鉄次は妻のおていと暮らしていたが、おていは流産を繰り返しており、二人は子宝に恵まれずにいた。一度目、二度目と、鉄次は子を授かれなかったおていを慰めたが、次第にその気持ちは諦めの色を帯びてきたのか……おていは「もうわたしたちだめなの」とこぼすようになった。
そして、今回も駄目だった。
気が滅入るのを胡麻化そうと、鉄次は一人居酒屋で飲んでいた。そこで喧嘩になったのを止めたお梶という女に、鉄次は興味を持った。何やらこの女は、鉄次のことを知っている様子だった。酒を飲みながら二人は意気投合し、一緒に遠出をしようという話になった。
鉄次はその話に乗り、気晴らしがてら出掛けようとするのだが……。©2020 PanRolling
