河津小弥太は刀、槍弓、柔術、馬、泳法すべてに群を抜いていた。
その上岩のような頑丈なからだを持ち、底抜けに明るく、愛嬌があった。
河津庄太夫はそこを見込んで、娘の伊勢と婚約をさせたが、彼には悪げはないのだがすぐに他人を投げ飛ばす癖があった。
庄太夫はそ乱暴さにほとほと愛想を尽かし、婚約の破棄を申し渡した。小弥太は承知しなかった。
そのあくる日の宵、突然伊勢が小弥太を訪ねてきた。
