昭和初期に活躍したが惜しくも早世した小説家、中島敦の短編小説。1943（昭和18）年の「中央公論」に発表された。儒教の開祖・孔子と、その弟子となった直情径行の青年・子路の関係を綴った物語。掲載号の編集後記でも、《氏は昨春「光と風と夢」の一作を世に問ひ、将来ある新人として令名を馳せるや、さらに本誌への自信のこの作品を寄せたが物故された。したがって新鮮味溢る々この作品は同氏の遺作となつた。》と才能ある新人作家の早過ぎる死を悼んだ。
