＜あらすじ＞
年老いた祖父と二人で暮らすおせんは、幼なじみで大人しい性格の庄吉から「上方で大工として身を立てるまで待っていてくれ」と言われる。その幼さから、おせんは「待っているわ」と応えてしまう。おせんは、同じく幼なじみで乱暴者だが度量の大きい幸太からも求婚されるが、庄吉との約束を守るため幸太を冷たくあしらってしまう。そんなある日、江戸の町を大火事が襲う。動くことのできない祖父を抱え、立ち往生していたおせんを助けに来たのは、かつてその想いを冷たく拒絶した幸太だった……。
