＜あらすじ＞
六助と中次は棒組の籠屋であった。
六助は肥えていて年は二十七であるが、うっかりすると四十くらいにみえた。固ぶとりで毛深くあぶら性で、その動作はゆっくりしていて、話しぶりも暢びりしていた。一方、中次は肥えてもいず痩せてもいなかった。色が浅黒く、いなせな顔だちで、年は六助と同じであるが二つばかり若くみえた。性格はせっかちでもなく、悪くおちついてもいない。そんな真逆にも思える二人は、南八丁堀二丁目の与兵衛店という裏長屋に隣同士に住んでいて、だいたいは同じ家に一緒にいたが、分かれて住んでいるときもあった。そんなとき、二人はいつも喧嘩をしているである。四年も五年も一緒に稼ぎ、寝起きからなにから一緒にしていて、ふだんは実の兄弟より仲が良いくせに、いつもつまらないことですぐに喧嘩をしていたのだ。ただ、たいてい五日から七日、長くても十日で仲直りをしていたのに、今回の喧嘩は何と半月も続いていた。
二人がよく行くめし屋の「魚金」の一人娘であるお梅は、いつまでも仲直りしない二人のことを見かねてあることを言い出すのだが————？
そのあと、仲直りした二人が通し駕籠で箱根まで送っていくことになった男の正体とは————？
