内容紹介
童話作家の笹本静雄が殺され、妻の笹本芳枝が誘拐された。
犯人はモジャモジャ頭で釣鐘マントの男だ。
探偵小説家・大江百虹の調べで、その正体が夏目太郎と判明する。
夏目は芳枝とはいとこにあたり、身寄りがなく叔父にひきとられていた芳枝と一緒に育ち、ゆくゆくは芳江と結婚することになっていた。
だが、夏目には精神異常の気があり、極端に緑色を好んだ。着る衣服はすべて緑づくめで、住む家も緑に塗りたくるという不思議な執着を持っていた。
夏目は自分を捨てて笹本と結婚した芳枝をうらみ、ついに凶行に及んだのだ。
大江百虹の活躍もあり、緑衣の鬼――夏目は幾度となく追い詰められるが、そのたびに魔法をかけたかのような謎の消失劇を演じ、逃走をかさねる。
なおも芳枝をつけ狙う緑衣の鬼にたいし、大江百虹は名探偵乗杉龍平に協力を要請するのだが……
