その商人の名前がジョン＝アランだったため、ポーの名前に「アラン」が入っています。そのアラン家で、特に養母に可愛がられて育ったポー。
しかし、大学に入学した頃から養父との仲が悪くなり、不真面目な大学生活を送っていたこともあり、養父から退学を命じられてしまいます。
その後、陸軍に入隊したり士官学校に行ったりと落ち着かない生活が続く中で、養母が病死し、養父が再婚。それを機にアラン家と離別したポーは、まだ13歳だった従妹と結婚し、生活のために雑誌編集の仕事に就きました。
それでも給料が安かったために、懸賞小説に応募して賞金稼ぎをしていたこともありました。
40年という短い生涯でしたが、ポーが残した作品は、詩や小説のほか評論、戯曲と多岐に渡っています。推理小説については、のちの推理作家たちが、ポーの作品からヒントを得て創作しているという点で、いかに優れた作品を残したかがうかがえます。
かの「赤き死」は永いこと、国中をむさぼり食った。これほど決定的に死ぬ、これほど忌わしい流行病がまたとあったろうか。血の赤さと恐怖――血こそこの疫の化身でありその印鑑であった。まず鋭い苦痛がして、引き続いて急激なめまいを感じ、やがて毛穴から夥しい血を噴き出して死んでしまうのである。
患者の体、ことに顔面に真紅のポツポツがあらわれるのであるが、これがこの疫の兆候で、こうなると最早、人々の同情も看護を絶対に得られなくなるのである。発病、昂進、死亡、これが全部でものの半時と経たない間に過ぎてしまうのである。
