1939年4月からの7年間、教員として教壇に立った経験を持つ三浦綾子。
17歳から24歳の青春期に教師として戦争時代を生きた三浦が、物語の主人公で教師の北森竜太を通じて、「昭和とは何であったのか」「戦争とは何であったのか」を問う本作。実際にあった「北海道綴方教育連盟事件」を素材として、戦争がもたらしたもの、戦禍を生きた人々の思い、戦時下の教育などが反映されています。
竜太は、愛情あふれる家庭に育った、純粋で賢い少年。小学校四年生の時、人間はみんな平等であるという信念を持った坂部先生から大きな影響を受け、竜太もまた教師の道へ進みます。そんな中で起こる「綴り方事件」。拘留生活を余儀なくされた竜太の環境は、そこから大きく変わっていきます。
そして、身も心も疲弊した竜太を支える芳子と婚約した矢先に届く赤紙……
