東京の都市化・近代化を進めたといわれる関東大震災(大正12年/1923年)は、実は人々に過去への郷愁や土地への愛着を呼び起こす契機となった。民俗学や民藝運動の誕生、民謡や盆踊りの復興は震災がきっかけだ。その保守的な情動は大衆ナショナリズムを生み、戦争へ続く軍国主義に結びつく。また大震災の経験は、合理的な対策に向かわず、自然災害への無力感を〈精神の復興〉にすりかえる最初の例となった。日本の災害時につきまとう諦念と土着回帰。気鋭の民俗学者が100年の歴史とともにその精神に迫る。
