About this listen

Four brave combatants fight for survival in a world where blood sport is taken to the ultimate extreme in this action-packed fantasy series debut.

Once every year, in the city of Sunja, gladiators meet in the arena known as Sunja’s Pit. Some are lured there by the prospect of fortune or fame; others come simply for the thrill of the fight. The games continue for days, until a champion is crowned—or all involved perish.

When it becomes clear that to be a Free Trained pit fighter is to live with a mark on one’s head, four warriors struggle to change their lot, both in and out of the arena. But that’s easier said than done, and not everyone is pleased to learn of their plans. All the while, unseen forces watch the quartet, waiting for the best time to strike—and take everything they have.

Perfect for fans of Gladiator and A Game of Thrones!

A Fan of Fantasy? Look no Further!

If you are a fan of fantasy, detailed character development, bloody combat, war, corruption, intrigue, deception, and twists and turns then you have found the book for you. John Lee is an incredible narrator who does an exceptional job at bringing author Keith C. Blackmore's words and world to life right before your ears. The pit, the gold, the drink, the girls, and the intrigue will have you on the edge of your seats as you listen to the first book in this series. You better have book 2 queued up for when this one is done because you will NOT want to stop there.

Good first book

It started off very slow and took some getting used to with the various initial characters. By the end of the book though I was thoroughly enjoying it.

Entertaining

Keith C. Blackmore offers an action-heavy story about a Gladiatorial tournament in the city of 'Sunja' - following four "Free-Trained" pit fighters battling to establish a "House"/training school to lend legitimacy to their efforts to win the annual 'Sunja Games'. The characters are complex, the dialogue & description are cinematic, and the fight choreography is excellent.
Unfortunately, the book is strikingly straightforward (read: uncomplicated) and hence never captivated me. I wasn't invested at any point for nebulous reasons (surprising me, I admit - I *love* Mr. Blackmore's stuff).

Reader John Lee is too aggressively "performing" the book rather than narrating it, too. To be certain, Lee's diction, timbre, cadence, and timing are creditable - but he injects far too much emotion into the dialogue & some scenes (and too often delivers indistinctive or cartoonish character interpretations, to boot). Podium Audio should have stuck with R.C. Bray as the go-to narrator for reading Blackmore's words.

Altogether, '131 Days' is worthy of 6 stars out of 10. It was a fun, violent rollercoaster-ride of a story ideal for a couple of quiet afternoons as a 'Plus' selection.. but neither ensnaring enough to prompt me to continue with the series nor worth a Credit over other options.
