About this listen

Her bloody finger left a translucent smear on the phone screen as she glanced through the list of private investigators in Vegas.

Her stained nail came to rest on Sin City Investigations. Jim Bean would serve her well.

Private investigator Jim Bean is a straightforward, to-the-point man. He likes his cases to follow suit. But when his latest client, Sophie Evers, asks him to find her brother Daniel, Jim has no idea how complicated his life is about to become. As he falls deep into a manipulative game of cat and mouse, Jim uncovers the horrible truth about Sophie. Now he must set things right before her plan leads to the loss of innocent souls...even more than it already has.

"Adequate" Psycho Stalker Story, I Guess

J.D. Allen introduces jaded, perpetually suspicious Las Vegas P.I. 'Jim Bean'  - along with some Hollywood typecast companions (a "quirky"  IT expert sidekick and a gruff ex-Military bodyguard) - in a silly cat & mouse confrontation with an obsessed murderess who hired him to find her target.
The plot holes are enormous in this book (you really need to suspend disbelief to accept the narrative) and the tropes are eyeroll-worthy - but the vocabulary/prose is capable, the dialogue is at least "realistic", and Allen's grasp of the psychopathic personality is commendable. This is a sufficiently satisfactory distraction to make a couple of quiet afternoons doing housework more enjoyable. Having it run in the background was reasonable.

Doubtless, above-average reading from A.T. Chandler makes the book more entertaining, too. Chandler reads too slowly (listen at 1.15X), but his praiseworthy diction, cadence, tone, and voice-acting are complemented by a pleasant baritone reading timbre that is comfortable for hours of listening. If given the option of getting '19 Souls' in a text version or this audiobook iteration - take this one hands-down.

If you can get this Podium Audio Inc production as part of the 'Plus' initiative.. it's not entirely crazy to do so. Should they ask for a Credit for this 4.5/10-star recording, however, better selections beckon.
