About this listen

Paul McGowan tells all (and then some) in this riotous tale of misbegotten success that’s 99 percent true in all the best ways. From his not-so-innocent youth growing up in the shadow of Disneyland and summer evenings in the innocent 1950s, to his dope-smoking, snake-eating, draft-dodging, loony-bin misadventure through Europe, to his struggles to build a thriving enterprise from a stack of dusty albums - see how the CEO of a worldwide company took 50 years to become an overnight success.

Unlike Paul, you may never get picked up by the secret service or carry the shame of bankruptcy, but you just might see yourself in his repeated failures or in his refusal to let life keep him down. You’ll laugh and you’ll cry as Paul describes the struggle of finding his place in a community you never knew existed. Through it all, you’ll discover what Paul did: life’s detours offer the best opportunities to find your way.

Funny story with heart - read by Paul himself

I really enjoyed this, not just from an audiophile perspective, but from a story point of view as well.

Paul's got a very relaxing and easy to listen to voice, and his stories are quite surprising at times!

Well done!

Paul is an excellent narrator! It was most enjoyable, laugh out loud, shake your head in disbelief and disgust in some of the food he ate and situations he found himself in. Quite entertaining! My favourite part is the long journey he took to hear an amazing sounding system that had nothing wrong with it just so the person could show Paul how happy and amazing his speakers were but sadly....it was in a very poor part of the world. Starts off a little slow but I still highly recommend!

Amazing, awe inspiring and motivational

It was extremely enjoyable listening to this audiobook of Paul’s life. From his wild young days as a boy getting into all kinds of trouble with his friends, to his more mature, more responsible adult days with his business ventures, Terry and the boys. It was as if I was watching a young wide eyed boy grow into a man who would eventually, and against all odds, see his dreams come true. After this book, I’m motivated to push harder to achieve the high goals I’ve set for myself, I feel encouraged to love family and friends deeper and enjoy every moment of life. After all, like Arnie, none of us know how long we have on this Earth.
