Story
Just before Christmas in 1843, a debt-ridden and dispirited Charles Dickens wrote a small book he hoped would keep his creditors at bay. His publisher turned it down, so Dickens used what little money he had to put out A Christmas Carol himself. He worried it might be the end of his career as a novelist. The book immediately caused a sensation. And it breathed new life into a holiday that had fallen into disfavor, undermined by lingering Puritanism and the cold modernity of the Industrial Revolution.

Story
The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers, and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them. Everything was perfect - except for the misty Marshlands to the north, which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Anyone sensible knew that the Ickabog was just a myth to scare children into behaving. But the funny thing about myths is that sometimes they take on a life of their own.

Wonderful adaptation
This multicast adaptation of Dickens' classic is worthy of annual listens. The sound effects included, enhanced and added the right spirit (no pun intended) of this wonderful story. Excellently done!

Fantastic performance
A wonderful classic presented in a fabulously engaging way. The narrator is absolutely amazing, he brings the story to life. The dramatization is perfect. From more than 25 audiobooks I have listened to, this is the number one best performance. Highly recommended.

Superb - what a Christmas Gift!
I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this production. Performances were top notch and it was equal to the Alistair Sims 1951 classic film. To be listened to annually in the future.

What a delightful listen!
I love this novella and have read it annually for years now. This drama stayed close to the book (it's about the same listening time as an unabridged read). I thought each of the characters were well performed and memorable. To me, the only con was Cranham as Scrooge. Imo, his performance was under played. It was quite good, but not brilliant. But he had big shoes to fill with Alastair Sim in the 1951 movie. Regardless, I wholly recommend this drama and definitely will listen to this next Christmas and the year after (along with Hugh Grant's narration of the story). It was a really delightful way to spend a few hours!

Beautifully Performed Adaptation of Dicken's Tale
This is one of the best adaptations of A Christmas Carol I have ever listened to or watched. No scenes have been cut for time (as often happens with film adaptations) so you get the full emotional experience that Dicken's created with his story.
Sir Derek Jacobi's narration is pitch-perfect. It is always in perfect sync with the tone of each scene so it never undercuts the emotional impact of the events.
All of the performers are perfectly cast. Usually, with audio plays, I have favorite performances as well as performances that I think could have been done better. But each of these performances are so well done that I don't have a favourite performance nor one that I consider a "weak link".
If you only buy one audiobook of Dicken's Christmas classic, make it this one.
