Publisher's Summary

The key to understanding the Arab world today - and in the future - is unlocking its past. John McHugo takes the reader on a journey through the political, social and intellectual history of the Arabs from the Roman Empire right up to the present day. He covers the mission of the Prophet Muhammad, the expansion of Islam, medieval and modern conflicts, the interaction with Western ideas, the struggle to escape foreign domination, the rise of Islamism, and the end of the era of dictators.

The concise history reveals how the Arab world came to have its present form, why change was inevitable and what choices lie ahead following the Arab Spring.

precise and unbiased modern history

The author briefly described the old Arab history, and fast forwarded to the 20th century; how the British and French agreed to divide "Great Syria" into four states which was occupied by them,  how they worked deliberately to rip the social fabric apart by stirring up different ethnic and religious groups against each other.
They succeeded by dividing Syria into what is known today as: Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine, then the British fulfilled their promise of granting Palestine to the Jewish people and orchisterated the Creation of Israel.

What we see today in the Middle East is partially the result of what happened 100 years ago. since then the Middle East is governed by dictators and western puppets who are disconnected from people, this encourage a new group to rise and fill the gaps, the political islam and the new extemist.
An ordinary Arab today has to accept either a corrupted dictator or a religious extremist, between the two, the greedy west, Iran and Israel , the new Arab spring is falling apart, people are being killed and stripped out of their humanity. No body can predict the future, but the French revolution took 100 years to the third republic.
