Publisher's Summary

A shield maiden blessed by the gods battles to unite a nation under a power-hungry king—while also fighting her growing desire for his fiery son—in the first book of a Norse-inspired fantasy romance series from the bestselling author of The Bridge Kingdom series.

Bound in an unwanted marriage, Freya spends her days gutting fish, but dreams of becoming a warrior. And of putting an axe in her boorish husband’s back.

Freya’s dreams abruptly become reality when her husband betrays her to the region’s jarl, landing her in a fight to the death against his son, Bjorn. To survive, Freya is forced to reveal her deepest secret: She possesses a drop of a goddess’s blood, which makes her a shield maiden with magic capable of repelling any attack. It was foretold such a magic would unite the fractured nation of Skaland beneath the one who controls the shield maiden’s fate.

Believing he’s destined to rule Skaland as king, the fanatical jarl binds Freya with a blood oath and orders Bjorn to protect her from their enemies. Desperate to prove her strength, Freya must train to fight and learn to control her magic, all while facing perilous tests set by the gods. The greatest test of all, however, may be resisting her forbidden attraction to Bjorn. If Freya succumbs to her lust for the charming and fierce warrior, she risks not only her own destiny but the fate of all the people she swore to protect.

The narration is really good

Casting a Nordic speaker to narrate really made the story come to life. I know I would have butchered the pronunciation of all the names. The story felt like a mash up of “From Blood and Ash” and “The Hobbit” but set with Vikings. I’m definitely invested to see what happens when Freya gets some more answers and what that will mean for Bjorn.

I LOVED IT!

Prepare yourself for a binge listen. I could not turn this off once I started. She had me from the first chapter. Fantastic.
Also, the narration is great!
10/10. I will absolutely pre-order the next book if pre-order is available.

Great read, kept me interested through until the end.

I really enjoyed this book. If you’ve ever watched The Last Kingdom TV Series, you’ll enjoy this story. There were moments where it reminded me of the TV show, but overall, this story is totally original. Definitely recommend!

Amazing Narration and Story

I've listened to many audiobooks, and in terms of fantasy narration Nina Yndis is certainly one of my favourites. She did an amazing job giving each of the characters their own voice, and made the listen incredibly immersive. I enjoyed the fantasy setting with the Norse mythology and a well thought out magic system that didn't just feel like deus ex machina. The romance was a lot of fun and those scenes did not, to me, feel forced at all. Highly recommend to those who enjoy adult fantasy novels. I can't wait to read more from this author.

I loved it!

I loved this! The audio was fantastic, loved the narrators accent and how her voice realistically and consistently changed for the voices of other characters. Can't wait for the rest of the series!

ok

When the first fight started it got really good. it stayed good for awhile but I ended up losing interest half way through pretty much until the end. Ending was really good. not sure if I'll start the next book.

Mediocre at best

Story is alright but if you’re new to smut maybe look elsewhere.
Nothing too original. I would just go watch Vikings instead

Great narrator

This is a fairly standard romantasy offering with norse mythology elements. I have no clue why the main character is so protective/attached to her family members as they all see like a-holes to me, but there you go. Narrator really added to the sense of ambiance in the story!

Excellent narration

I absolutely loved the narration!

The story was not bad, but quite predictable. I noticed another reader compare it to Blood and Ash, and while that’s an apt comparison, I like how the story is more concise.
