Great narration - brain candy.

I thought the narration was amazing - I enjoyed hearing about the characters, their trials and tribulations. I love when there are strong feminine friendships that show support.
I did, however, feel a bit worn down by Arletta’s internal struggles. The writer almost acknowledges it with a few moments of “even though everything said to the contrary” - so the listener at least knows they aren’t missing something and that the “issue” is entirely the struggle of the character.
Very very pleasant and delicious and fun.
Charming and supportive love interest, without all the tropes that happen with fantasy love stories.

Narrator does an amazing job with such a lacklustre story

I love a cozy fantasy and was really looking forward to listening to this one.

While the food descriptions had my stomach grumbling the entire time, I will say that this book fell short for me. The plot was very simplistic and low stakes, which I know is a norm for cozy fantasies, but I saw all the “twists” happening many chapters before they were revealed.

The main character was also very annoying. Throughout the entire book, she goes on and on about how she’s human, she’s magic-less, she doesn’t deserve to be in the baking competition, etc. It got old quickly.

Couple that with the fact that the baking competition starts at 40% of the way through the book, and that the baking competition felt very Great British Bake Off, I think I would have preferred to read it instead of listening to it on audiobook. That way I could have skimmed past all of the negative internal monologue and focus on the story.

The side characters in this book were very interesting. I loved Dolly, Jez, Arleta’s neighbours and Theo. I’d be interested to read the second book, as it’s from Dolly’s POV, and we won’t be getting Arleta’s internal monologue.

If you enjoy cozy fantasies, I’d recommend checking this book out on KU.
