Publisher's Summary

A generation past, the western realms were embroiled in endless war. Then the Destroyer came. From the blood and ashes he left behind, a tenuous alliance rose between the barbarian riders of Parsathe and the walled kingdoms of the south. That alliance is all that stands against the return of an ancient evil - until the barbarian king and queen are slain in an act of bloody betrayal.

Though forbidden by the alliance council to kill the corrupt king responsible for his parents' murders, Maddek vows to avenge them, even if it costs him the Parsathean crown. But when he learns it was the king's daughter who lured his parents to their deaths, the barbarian warrior is determined to make her pay.

Yet the woman Maddek captures is not what he expected. Though the last in a line of legendary warrior-queens, Yvenne is small and weak, and the sharpest weapons she wields are her mind and her tongue. Even more surprising is the marriage she proposes to unite them in their goals and to claim their thrones - because her desire for vengeance against her father burns even hotter than his own....

What a concept!

I really enjoyed this book! I listened to the audio version on audible, narrated by Nicole Poole. She performed the story well, though there were a few brief moments where she seemed slightly robotic.

I think this was a recommended read on my kindle account. This is my first foray into a book by Milla Vane. I am thrilled by this story!!

This is a fantasy romance, and there aren't a whole lot of this genre our there that blends just the right amount of romance and fantasy. Milla Vane adds just the right dose of sweetness, sexual tension, lust, and humor to Yvenne and Maddeks' romance that it isn't "fluffy," pathetic, or eye-rolling. In fact, the relationship between the couple starts off cold, and is strictly based on politics. Yvenne and Maddek are traveling with a party of his soldiers, and they get to know one another as they overcome a variety of challenges, small and large. Both characters demonstrate personal growth that is integral to how well the story flows. Each has their own faults, their human mistakes, and ghosts of their past to overcome.

Yvenne, while petite, and oft described as "weak" in body, is fierce and sharp of mind, a true moral compass and Queen in truth, not just title.

This story has elements of high fantasy, and has a unique cast of lovable (and despicable) supportive characters. There is so much action, adventure, world-building, that the book is a delightful immersive read. So much more than a romance.

Oh. And dinosaurs are a thing!!

Also, magic.

One thing I actually laughed at a few times, was some of the lustful dialogue. Language choice, I feel, is intended to be as it is to somewhat illustrate detail in characters' world culture. Sadly, I have an aversion to the use of the word "cunt" to refer to lady bits. I think the author didn't have to delve (hah!) so hard (double hah!) into lengthy descriptions of sex, repeatedly using "seed", "sheath", "cunt", "shaft" etc. Like, switch it up a bit!! I feel like one page must have had a 100 "cunts!" Lol!

Anyway, apart from that, I am hugely interested to see what happens with the Destroyer and where Maddek and Yvenne's adventures lead them.
