About this listen
"A graceful love story...and an authentic presentation of the 1860s that reads with the simplicity and visual gusto of a period movie." (Readers' Favorite)
A courtship of convenience.
Sophie Appersett is quite willing to marry outside of her class to ensure the survival of her family. But the darkly handsome Mr. Edward Sharpe is no run-of-the-mill London merchant. He's grim and silent. A man of little emotion - or perhaps no emotion at all. After two months of courtship, she's ready to put an end to things.
A last chance for love.
But severing ties with her taciturn suitor isn't as straightforward as Sophie envisioned. Her parents are outraged. And then there's Charles Darwin, Prince Albert, and that dratted gaslight. What's a girl to do except invite Mr. Sharpe to Appersett House for Christmas and give him one last chance to win her? Only this time, there'll be no false formality. This time, they'll get to know each other for who they really are.

Story
Hidden away in rural Devonshire, Phyllida Satterthwaite has always been considered more odd than beautiful. But in London, her oddity has made her a sensation. Far worse, it’s caught the eye of the sinister Duke of Moreland - a notorious art collector obsessed with acquiring one-of-a-kind treasures. To escape the duke’s clutches, she’s going to need a little help. Captain Arthur Heywood’s days of heroism are long past. Grievously injured in the Peninsular War, he can no longer walk unaided, let alone shoot a pistol. What use can he possibly be to a damsel in distress?

Story
Evelyn Maltravers understands exactly how little she's worth on the marriage mart. As an incurable bluestocking from a family tumbling swiftly toward ruin, she knows she'll never make a match in a ballroom. Her only hope is to distinguish herself by making the biggest splash in the one sphere she excels: on horseback. In haute couture. But to truly capture London's attention she'll need a habit-maker who's not afraid to take risks with his designs - and with his heart.

Story
She wanted sanctuary... Helena Reynolds will do anything to escape her life in London, even if that means traveling to a remote cliffside estate on the North Devon coast and marrying a complete stranger. But Greyfriar's Abbey isn't the sort of refuge she imagined. And ex-army captain Justin Thornhill - though he may be tall, dark, and devastatingly handsome - is anything but a romantic hero. He needed redemption... Justin has spent the last two decades making his fortune, settling scores, and suffering a prolonged period of torture in an Indian prison.

Story
Hannah Kent and Oliver Jennings pledged their hearts to each other as children. Now, years later, Hannah is thrilled to receive an invitation to spend the summer at Oliver’s family’s country estate. The path to wedded bliss is clear - so long as Oliver’s highbrow older brother, Damon, has ceased his juvenile antics, Hannah’s future looks bright indeed. But from the moment Hannah arrives at Summerhaven, nothing is as she expected. Oliver seems disinterested in renewing their acquaintance, and Damon is not the brutish boy she remembers but a man intent on avoiding marriage.

Light Fun Read for Christmas
I wanted a story that was light and refreshing. I also wanted something that involved Christmas. I found it in this book.
The status of the different groups of people in this book was interesting.
If you want a fun, light read for this time of year, you would probably enjoy this book.

Great holiday Romance
If you're in the mood for a toe-curling Victorian-with-a-Regency-flair holiday escape read look no further. A Holiday by Gaslight has everything I love in a historical romance. A reserved hero who isn't so much brooding as unsure of all the aristocratic social graces. An opinionated heroine who isn't afraid to speak her mind. A delightful mix-up in the communications department -- please, won't one of you just say what you're thinking? Out loud! In the presence of the other? But no, they'd rather banter back and forth with witty dialogue! I have such a weakness for time period banter and this is divine! Happy sigh. The lovely Victorian Christmas traditions add a wonderful holiday flare. Hello -- mistletoe scenes require the presence of a fainting couch! Definitely a scrumptious way to read in the season!

Although Alex Wyndham could read the phone book and I would listen, this is an excellent story. Perfect for Christmas

Really nice story
I really like this story. The narrator was okay, I think I would have preferred a female though.

Fun
I really enjoyed the story and the narrator was great at all characters!
Plus it combines two of my favourite things, Victorian England and Christmas.

A well imagined, well performed story!
It kept me smiling all throughout! The writing is unaffected and engaging. The story is heartwarming and altogether pleasing. I listened to it all afternoon folding and sorting laundry, my least favour chore, and I hardly noticed at all because of hoe much I was enjoying the story. Thanks Mimi and Alex for a snowy November afternoon enjoyably spent.

Oh yes yes yes, really liked this one!
This was my first book by this author. I was a bit unsure of the choice of narrator initially and the male love interest but oh good heavens it gets good. If you’re prone to butterflies get ready and I think I held my breath for the last half, had to sit down. A short but oh so good little Christmas romance. Think I might just listen to it again right now! Definitely going to check out more by Mimi.
