Publisher's Summary

In the cut-throat game of court life, masters manipulate pawns—and you never know which one you are. One thing is certain: there's no space on the board for love.

A penniless noblewoman, Kat is on the verge of losing everything when she's offered a well-paid job that could be her salvation… or her ruin. Drawn into court's deadly intrigues, she's given a single task: spy on the powerful fae lord known as the Night Queen's Shadow.

Bastian Marwood is handsome, ruthless, and cunning, but Kat can't decide if he's a threat to her kingdom or just her heart. To uncover the truth, she must play a dangerous game of desire and deceit, pushing him to reveal his secrets while protecting her own. But Bastian's shadows have a hold on her—one she isn't sure she wants to escape.

Kat soon learns that at court, nothing is as it seems, and even the best-laid plans can be destroyed in an instant. As a pawn on the board, she can't afford to fall victim to love—only fight for survival.

A Kiss of Iron is the first book in a new series featuring court intrigue, a morally grey hero, and an unforgettable enemies-to-lovers romance. Perfect for fans of Gild and From Blood and Ash.

One of the best I’ve read in a while!

Fantastic writing, characters, world building. This was such a treat to listen to. Great performances, really brought the characters to life.

A great portrayal of PTSD and how sexism affects women but make it mideval fae

The characters were compelling and yet the FMC’s inner monologue of anxiety and insecurity and low self esteem became tedious after an entire book of it. I almost DNF’d it because of that but I just wanted the payoff at the end! Yet, it’s an accurate portrayal of how trauma can affect people. The many examples of how women are mistreated and relegated to second class citizens—even when they appear to have a great deal of power on paper— was poignant. But also so heavy I had to fast forward through some parts. I didn’t understand some of the characters decisions, sometimes anxiety made them act really stupidly, and the love story needed a lot more depth to make it believable. Would have loved more lore and exploration of Kat’s husband and sister. The steam is a slow burn but fantastically written. Looking forward to learning more about the fae kingdoms in subsequent novels in the series.

I really enjoyed this book. The story was well written and the female narrator did an excellent job. Looking forward to the second book.

Such beautiful writing and perfect narration

The writing in the book flows like water. It’s poetic and beautiful. The female narrator is one of the best narrators! Enjoyed every minute!

The book is exhausting to listen to

The female lead weakness piss me off. i really hate stories like this where the female is just always a damsel in distress with no improvement in character. makes the entire storyline tiring to listen to.

where is the fantasy?

this is a very dull listen. the story is really lacking in fantasy, it contains characteristics commonly found in fantasy, but it lacked world building, descriptions, character development, complex characters, magic…even the plot had no focus on fantasy. the writing felt very juvenile, and what i would expect to see in a YA or children’s book but the only reason it is adult is because of the mature themes.

if you have never read fantasy before and are looking to slowly get into the genre or if you’re looking for a book that is more alternative universe romance than you may enjoy this. but if you are looking for a true fantasy romance or anything epic or high fantasy, i highly suggest skipping this book
