About this listen

The setting is Atlanta, Georgia - a racially mixed, late-century boomtown full of fresh wealth and wily politicians. The protagonist is Charles Croker, once a college football star, now a late-middle-aged Atlanta conglomerate king whose outsize ego has at last hit up against reality. Charlie has a 29,000-acre quail-shooting plantation, a young and demanding second wife, and a half-empty office complex with a staggering load of debt.

Meanwhile, Conrad Hensley, idealistic young father of two, is laid off from his job at the Croker Global Foods warehouse near Oakland and finds himself spiraling into the lower depths of the American legal system.

And back in Atlanta, when star Georgia Tech running back Fareek “the Canon” Fanon, a homegrown product of the city’s slums, is accused of date-raping the daughter of a pillar of the white establishment, upscale black lawyer Roger White II is asked to represent Fanon and help keep the city’s delicate racial balance from blowing sky-high.

Networks of illegal Asian immigrants crisscrossing the continent, daily life behind bars, shady real estate syndicates - Wolfe shows us contemporary America with all the verve, wit, and insight that have made him our most admired novelist. Charlie Croker’s deliverance from his tribulations provides an unforgettable denouement to the most widely awaited, hilarious, and telling novel America has seen in ages - Tom Wolfe’s most outstanding achievement to date.

Publisher's Summary

An Atlanta real estate developer turned conglomerate king finds that his expansionist business interests, ambitions, and larger-than-life ego have dramatically met up with reality in this Tom Wolfe classic, A Man in Full.

Tom Wolfe was a New York Times bestselling American novelist and journalist that rose to fame with works like The Bonfire of the Vanities, The Right Stuff, I Am Charlotte Simmons, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby, Radical Chic & Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers, and many more groundbreaking novels, short stories and novellas. Tom Wolfe earned a Ph.D. in American studies from Yale and is one of the founders of the new journalism movement. In 1980, Tom Wolfe’s novels earned him the prestigious National Book Award, and he was a nominee two other times.

A Man in Full was Tom Wolfe’s second novel. The powerful story is about a real estate mogul facing ruin, his wife who desperately clings to her social standing, a man with a vested interest in his downfall, and a young black man who discovers stoic philosophy in prison. Their lives and stories merge to underscore the disparity of life in contemporary America, making Tom Wolfe an enduring figure in American literature. Michael Prichard is narrating this Audible audiobook, expertly bringing Tom Wolfe’s engrossing character development to life in breathtaking ways.

In late 2021, it was announced that A Man in Full would be made into a limited drama series for Netflix. The series is written by David E. Kelley, directed by Oscar winner Regina King, and will star Hollywood legend Jeff Daniels as Charlie Croker the Eternal.

What the critics say

"The novel contains passages as powerful and as beautiful as anything written - not merely by contemporary American novelists but by any American novelist.... The book is as funny as anything Wolfe has ever written; at the same time it is also deeply, strangely affecting." (The New York Times Book Review)

"A masterpiece." (The Wall Street Journal)

"Superior...utterly engrossing." (USA Today)

Tremendous fun!

Wolfe is a brilliant writer. This is a wonderful story - funny, poignant and so entertaining. Very long but I didn’t want it to end.

Another "Can't put it down" from Tom Wolfe

Excellent! Tom Wolfe is the absolute master at character development, storyline building and topical situations. In this novel based in Atlanta, there is the marrying of dreams, greed, racial tension, politics and clarity. I enjoyed every minute - the narration is top-notch!
