Joseph Bonanno
About this listen
"Friendships, connections, family ties, trust, loyalty, obedience - this was the 'glue' that held us together." These were the principles that the greatest Mafia "Boss of Bosses", Joseph Bonanno, lived by. Born in Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily, Bonanno found his future amid the whiskey-running, riotous streets of Prohibition America in 1924, when he illegally entered the United States to pursue his dreams. By the age of only 26, Bonanno became a don. He eventually took over the New York underworld, igniting the "Castellammarese War", one of the bloodiest Family battles ever to hit New York City.
Now, in this candid and stunning memoir, Joe Bonanno - likely a model for Don Corleone in the blockbuster movie The Godfather - takes listeners inside the world of the real Mafia. He reveals the inner workings of New York's Five Families - Bonanno, Gambino, Profaci, Lucchese, and Genovese - and uncovers how the Mafia not only dominated local businesses, but also influenced national politics. A fascinating glimpse into the world of crime, A Man of Honor is an unforgettable account of one of the most powerful crime figures in America's history.

The Sixth Family, now revised and updated, reveals the hidden history of the rise of the Rizzuto clan, the alliances it forged around the world, and the bloody events that led to charges against Vito Rizzuto in the United States and Italy for racketeering and corruption.

Story
John Gotti was without a doubt the flashiest and most feared Mafioso in American history. He became the boss of the Gambino Crime Family in spectacular fashion—with the brazen and very public murder of Paul Castellano in front of Sparks Steakhouse in midtown Manhattan in 1985. Not one to stay below law enforcement’s radar, Gotti instead became the first celebrity crime boss. His penchant for eye-catching apparel earned him the nickname “The Dapper Don;” his ability to beat criminal charges led to another: “The Teflon Don.”

Story
At the dawn of the 20th century, two Italian men arrived in Canada amid waves of immigration. One, Rocco Perri, from southern Italy, rose from the life of a petty criminal on the streets of Toronto to running the most prominent bootlegging operation of the Prohibition era, taking over Hamilton and leading one of the country’s most influential crime syndicates. Perri was feared by his enemies and loved by the press, who featured him regularly in splashy front-page headlines.

Story
With its brilliant and brutal portrayal of the Corleone family, The Godfather burned its way into our national consciousness. This unforgettable saga of crime and corruption, passion and loyalty continues to stand the test of time, as the definitive novel of the Mafia underworld. A #1 New York Times bestseller in 1969, Mario Puzo's epic was turned into the incomparable film of the same name, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. It is the original classic that has been often imitated, but never matched.

Great Story - Wrong Narrator
This is a fascinating story about the history of Italian organized crime in America. It is the personal narrative of a proud intelligent crime boss. A deep source of his pride is his Sicilian heritage.
The narrator, Tom Perkins has a pleasant voice and clear diction. He is suited to narrate many books. Not this one! Mr. Perkins does not have an ear for the Italian language. He mangles the names of people and places. Why is this important? Because the music of the Italian language is integral to the essence of this story. It contributes to an understanding of the author's values, his worldview, and his character.
The narrator's Italian pronunciation distorts and diminishes the power of the words he reads. The effect, to a listener who knows Italian, is like hearing a cherished song played by a non-musician. Tom Perkins is qualified to present the facts of the story. The deeper meaning of that story lies way beyond the facts.
