About this listen

Two new apprentices. One charming engineer. A potential battle with both sea serpents and evil sorcerers.

When Sorcerer Adrien Danvers takes on a job that leads him into the slums of England, he never imagined he'd end up with not one but two apprentices. Despite his doubts about himself, he's the only chance the two pre-teens have to escape their hellish life.

When Sir Hugh Quartermain contracts him to deal with the mysterious circumstances surrounding his home on the Isle of Man, Adrien finds the more time they spend together, the more his walls come down around the beguiling engineer—an unusual occurrence and a terrifying prospect.

As it turns out, this case is about to take a turn—a battle with both beast and man, the ultimate test of Adrien's willingness to accept help. When he does, Hugh proves to be a fierce protector and friend, more so than Adrien could've ever bargained for, and he finds himself longing for something he shouldn't.

Falling for his new friend is not a complication Adrien needs. (His matchmaking apprentices disagree.)

Fantastic

Most enjoyable. AJ Sherwood did it again. Her books are fantastic. I have a number of her books in my library and they are all wonderful. Her plot and story line are marvellous and always interesting. David Lee Huynh is an excellent narrator and his performance of the different characters brings them to life. I hope there will more audiobooks to come for this series and I know I will not be disappointed.

Magical AU with loads of found family and adventure

4.5/5 This was so much fun. AJ Sherwood is pretty much an insta-read for me, so I actually didn’t know a single thing about this book, just clicked “read now” on release day. I was instantly drawn to the plight of Julian and Mac, and I loved how Adrien had no idea what he was doing but nonetheless proceeded with utter certainty about the decent and right thing to do. I’m not normally a fan of a romance that has the MCs meeting late in the book, but I was so wrapped up in Adrien and the kids that it didn’t bother me here.

In fact, I’m not even sure this qualifies as a slow burn. I think the series will, but this book doesn’t actually have romance, just a solid hope for the future. It is an awesome fantasy adventure with loads of awesome queer characters (some of whom do some pining, lol). I love all the characters, Adrien and the kids, Hugh, Anastasia and Cynric, the dogs.

Adrien’s large amount of power is nicely balanced with bad luck, somewhat poor people skills (like his absurd relationship with royalty, lol), and a whole lot of stubbornness. I’m glad that he has a core group of friends that he can trust, and I look forward to seeing that number grow. I can’t wait to see what they all get up to next!

A refreshing change in MM

I really enjoyed this book. I find I get a little frustrated with formulaic stories in the mm genre and this was a refreshing suprise. I enjoyed the emphasis on the story, rather than just the romance, the slow burn with attention to character development, and the secondary character development. I just loved the boys and sort of wish for a future book with some kind of a reuniting type of coupling for them, but that might a bit fanciful.

If I had one complaint, it is that our two main characters are just a tad too "good". Sir Hugh needed to be a bit grumpier at times.

A really good story overall. I waited until the second came out to read them and glad I did.
