About this listen
Sgt. Elodie Carney wakes in the hospital. After learning she was nearly killed by a suicide bomber on her way to Kabul, she is told she is no longer whole. Her face and body are scarred. Elodie must find the strength to rebuild her life. After her husband divorces her, she is adrift for three years. Broken inside, Elodie is stuck in a spiraling self-pity rut. The once dynamic Elodie Carney decides to rediscover herself and her roots.
Elodie begins a journey of self-discovery and finds her joy. Searching out her Carney ancestors, she visits graveyards from Kentucky to Pennsylvania. She discovers her past through her distant relatives. Upon arriving in Philadelphia, she visits a historical graveyard. Elodie is excited--she wants to see Benjamin Franklin’s final resting place. Curiosity gets the best of Elodie when she discovers an old, abandoned graveyard and a tombstone. She is drawn to that tombstone because it has her name on it, or the name of a distant relative she was named for. Until she tumbles back in time to 1779, right into the Revolutionary War. There are few choices for a woman alone in 1779, and so Elodie joins the Continental Army...as a man.
