Fowler, a Canadian diplomat and U.N. envoy, and his colleague, Louis Guay, were kidnapped in 2008 by Al Qaeda in Niger and then moved to Mali. Fowler's back was badly injured, food was scarce, and he worried about drinking the water. Lawrence vividly recounts Fowler's descriptions of the desert, his abductors, and his fear. He does an outstanding job with the many accents and personalities of the principal characters and differentiates the terrorists - some fairly reasonable and others cruel. WOW What a book!!

wow! What a story about Extreme Survival experience. extremely insightful into situational awareness and indicators prior, ongoing personal choices and dilemmas to maximize survivability the Raw unforgiving truth of a life-and-death situation that truly trumps any and all bureaucracy, sensitivities and political correctness.

Amazing they returned

Gripping story, amazed they returned safely. Not everyone does. As a Canadian, I am appreciative of the work our diplomats do and the risks they take. Interesting insights into how Canada responds to foreign kidnappings.
