About this listen
Former English professor Cat Latimer is back in Colorado, hosting writers' retreats in the big blue Victorian she's inherited, much to her surprise, from none other than her carousing ex-husband. Now it's an authors' getaway, but Cat won't let anyone get away with murder.
The bed-and-breakfast is open for business, and best-selling author Tom Cook is among its first guests. Cat doesn't know why he came all the way from New York, but she's glad to have him among the quirkier - and far less famous - attendees.
Cat's high school sweetheart, Seth, who's fixing up the weathered home, brings on mixed emotions for Cat, some of them a little overpowering. But it's her uncle, the local police chief, whom she'll call for help when there's a surprise ending for Tom Cook in his cozy guest room. Will a killer have the last word on the new life Cat has barely begun?

I love this author, but...
the narrator is terrible. I can usually keep going until I get used to the voice, but I haven't made it past the first chapter. She is far too loud and trying too hard to enunciate. Unfortunate, because I was looking forward to another great series.

Mystery seems like background fodder
This book’s concept of a writer dying at a writer’s retreat,in a small town, surrounded by other writers was perfect for a cozy mystery, but the lead female character’s ( Cat) irritating and seemingly irrational behaviour towards Seth throughout the beginning of the book, that I assume would eventually reblossom into romance, tainted the book for me. I kept thinking, why is there so much unnecessary drama surrounding this very on edge character and when does the mystery begin?
Then the mystery began and I was more disappointed. Really??? No flourishes on how the murder is discovered. No matter who you are, you can’t just knock twice on someone’s hotel room door and then barge in with only a fleeting thought of “I hope he’s dressed” for no actual reason.
This book rambles so I didn’t bother finishing. Why waste time?

What an unlikeable main character!
This one could have been ok… but the main character is truly so unlikeable! She is objectively rude. Never a please or thank you when her bff (yes business partner but that makes it even more important!) supplies her with food and drink. Maybe I’m just Canadian but it stood out so much it bothered me the whole book. She pushes everyone away and gets defensive over everything. This character is an author and speaks about how important voice is… not so much the story but the story telling it and then the author of this book makes the voice so unlikeable. Mediocre story plus a trash character makes this one a giant pass in my books 👎👎
