About this listen
The moment Spencer meets Hope the summer before seventh grade, it's...something at first sight. He knows she's special, possibly even magical. The pair become fast friends, climbing trees and planning world travels. After years of being outshone by his older brother and teased because of his Tourette syndrome, Spencer finally feels like he belongs. But as Hope and Spencer get older and life gets messier, the clear label of "friend" gets messier, too.
Through sibling feuds and family tragedies, new relationships and broken hearts, the two grow together and apart, and Spencer, an aspiring scientist, tries to map it all out using his trusty system of taxonomy. He wants to identify and classify their relationship, but in the end, he finds that life doesn't always fit into easy-to-manage boxes, and it's this messy complexity that makes life so rich and beautiful.

Aimed at young adults, but this senior enjoyed it
The language is often what my mother called salty, but realistic. Narration was excellent. Forever love is a lovely ideal . Found it hard to accept the casual attitude to teen sex, wish we hadn't had to have the hangups of our generation!

Cute
So, I bough this while it was an Audible Daily Deal and I didn't expect to like it as much as I did. This was adorable! I was having trouble sleeping one night and decided to listen it and honestly, it did not help me sleep. Of course, this was because I couldn't stop listening. Spencer was just cute. His narration was such a joy to listen to. Sometimes you just wanted to hug him. I also enjoyed Hope, the main love interest, as well. Honestly, I don't think there was a character I disliked.
The plot was not complex and it was predictable, which this story did not need. It's meant to be a coming of age story and romance.
Maybe the story could have played up the taxonomy angle more then it actually does. But that's a small criticism.
All in all, it was a joy to read.
