Publisher's Summary

Acclaimed epic fantasy author John Gwynne with the first book of a new trilogy.

The Ben-Elim, a race of warrior angels, once vanquished a mighty demon horde. Now they rule the Banished lands. But their dominion is brutally enforced and their ancient enemy may not be as crushed as they thought.

In the snowbound north, Drem, a trapper, finds mutilated corpses in the forests—a sign of demonic black magic.

In the south, Riv, a young, tempestuous soldier, discovers a deadly rift within the Ben-Elim themselves.

Two individuals with two world-changing secrets. But where will they lead? And what role will Drem and Riv play in the Banished Land's fate? Difficult choices need to be made.

In the shadows, dark forces are gathering, waiting for their time to rise....

What the critics say

"A Time of Dread reminds me of why I became a fantasy enthusiast in the first place. Fantasy can be an escape from reality, but some stories carry the reader to an enhanced reality, a place where the world seems to have brighter colors and sharper contrasts."—Robin Hobb

"The book reminded me in the very best way of the sort of fantasy I loved in years gone by. Exciting, well-written, swords and sorcery. Try it on for size."—Mark Lawrence
"Great evils, conflicted heroes, bloody battles, betrayal, and giants riding battle bears! What's not to love?"—Peter Newman

Great characters

creates a cool world with characters you care about and root for ..who you also sometimes have to mourn when he kills them off.

Solid Entry into Genre

Really good book. Compelling story and cool characters and world but feels like there should be more. Given this is the first entry into the series that is not surprising. Can't wait to see how the story plays out and has a real shot to be a five star review upon its continuation and conclusion. Not an overly complex or intricate plot but shows real promise for the next entries.

Great narration and story

Love John Gwynne and this series of books. Damien is one of the best narrators out there. His use of accents really aids the listener in delving into the story. My one gripe with this book in particular was some of the pacing in narration. Nothing to do with Damien, but editing left for some long pauses in certain places.

I was hoping for a new twist

The characters fall into the same pit traps as the first series. It is frustrating to listen to the protagonists keep failing forward. Reusing the same themes and elements from the first series gets a bit repetitive. I will finish the series because I liked the first series and hope this series picks up.
