About this listen

Two from the master of the legal thriller:

A Time to Kill:
The life of a 10-year-old black girl is shattered by two drunken and remorseless young men. The mostly white town reacts with shock and horror at the inhuman crime, until her father acquires an assault rifle and takes justice into his own outraged hands.

For 10 days, with burning crosses and the crack of sniper fire spreading through the streets of Clanton, Mississippi, the nation sits spellbound as young defense attorney Jack Brigance struggles to save his client's life...and then his own.

The King of Torts:
When Clay Carter of the public defender's office reluctantly takes the case of a young man charged with a random street killing, he assumes it is just another of the many senseless murders that hit D.C. every week. But as he digs into the background of his client, Clay stumbles on a conspiracy too horrible to believe. He suddenly finds himself in the middle of a complex case against one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, looking at the kind of enormous settlement that would totally change his life - that would make him, almost overnight, the legal profession's newest king of torts.

Great books

Loved the books. The sequence of the chapters are out if sync though. Started on chapter 23 of the first book and found the the rest of it in the middle of the next book

Classic Grisham at his best!

A Time to Kill left me on the edge of my seat, I wasn’t sure of the verdict until it was revealed… King of Torts is a great book with many different edges :)

Idea for Grisham's next book

Both books are amazing. A time to kill is hard to listen to due to all the racism and the child involved, but hopefully this is an era mostly over by now in the south. A modern version of this book Grisham should write would be the child victim becoming pregnant and being denied a legal abortion.

The king of torts was a roller coaster, you love the excitement and winning but just cringe at his irresponsible behaviour. Really makes you think about the ethics of all these mass class action cases. Great insight and fascinating.

Narrator is perfect and stories are exceptional

New to John Grisham but these are heart wrenching stories that are perfect to listen to on commutes or lazy evenings.

Top Notch. Chapter problem fixed.

I was worried after reading listener reviews. Several said that the order of chapters was off. It must have been fixed. Other than a few seconds of static in one chapter of the second offering, the recording is fine.

These are superior legal thrillers - clever maneuvering, clashing personalities, and engrossing courtroom drama. If someone hears "John Grisham", they rightly think of this genre. He is the master.
The writing isn't perfect..the Ellen Roark character in the first book is unapologetically tacked-on, for example.
Characters in that novel also rail against how the South is unfairly characterized and then Grisham proceeds to advance every stereotype that exists. But 'A Time To Kill' is still a fantastic novel.
'The King Of Torts', the second novel in this recording, is an engrossing tale of a principled public defender that soars into wealth (and profligacy). He shifts into a Mass Tort lawyer getting rich settling Class Action lawsuits with large corporations. SPOILER:

He eventually falls victim to his greed in what amounts to a very good cautionary tale. Again, not flawless, but eminently enjoyable.

Michael Beck does an 'adequate' job narrating. His pacing, emphasis, and timbre are appropriate, but some of the accents are cartoonishly clichéed. The performance is nothing special.

All in all, I give this recording 8 stars out of 10. It's well worth a credit.

Narration was excellent and the stories were page turners!

Wish they were longer! These were my first two John Grisham books and I understand the hype. They were good listens.
