Publisher's Summary
Jean Paget is just twenty years old and working in Malaya when the Japanese invasion begins. When she is captured she joins a group of other European women and children whom the Japanese force to march for miles through the jungle. While on the march, the group run into some Australian prisoners, one of whom, Joe Harman, helps them steal some food, and is horrifically punished by the Japanese as a result. After the war, Jean tracks Joe down in Australia and together they begin to dream of surmounting the past and transforming his one-horse outback town into a thriving community like Alice Springs...

Not disappointed
I read this novel in my teens many years ago and loved it. I was worried that the narration would not be good enough and would spoil my enjoyment of a beloved book for me. Fortunately I really enjoyed the narrators style and it only added to the great story.

Really enjoyed this
Stories of the war really hit home, and I was quickly invested in the characters. A great, though at times a little painful, listen.

Nevil Shute - a great story teller
This epic story spans from WW2 in Malaysia to Queensland Australia. The characters are so decent and brave, wonderfully descriptive. I found the narrator had an excellent way of handling the different accents. I did find the racially bias regarding aboriginals was jarring but expect it reflects the attitudes of those times accurately. I look forward to finding more books by this author.
