About this listen

Fourteen-year-old Mona isn't like the wizards charged with defending the city. She can't control lightning or speak to water. Her familiar is a sourdough starter, and her magic only works on bread. She has a comfortable life in her aunt's bakery making gingerbread men dance.

But Mona's life is turned upside down when she finds a dead body on the bakery floor. An assassin is stalking the streets of Mona's city, preying on magic folk, and it appears that Mona is his next target. And in an embattled city suddenly bereft of wizards, the assassin may be the least of Mona's worries....

Incredible

If you like whimsical or cosy stories with almost childlike wonder but also much darker themes and a lot more death this one’s for you. I will never stop recommending this book

Clever, original and for all ages

I did not expect to love this book as much as I did. Mona is a charming and resilient character with some real complexity. I especially love that she is a protagonist but not a hero. She resents being put in this situation, which honestly no 14 year-old girl should be in.

While the book is for young adults, I deeply enjoyed this story of working with what you have, and rising to the occasion, even if you happen to be dough.

Exactly what you’d expect and then not so much.

This book was fun, it had an excellent selection of characters and was a very easy “read”. I choice this book for its title alone and ended up pleasantly surprised. It’s a classic tale of the unlikely hero with a few twists and turns. Would highly recommend for young teens.

This book definitely took its time to get going, but once it did, it was amazing!

I will admit that the first half feels like a very young YA book - the main character is going to go give the ruler of the city a good talking to, and everything will be fine.

Obviously, that’s not really what happens. The city comes under attack, and Mona, a 14-year-old magic baker needs to defend it.

Probably my favourite line of the book is when Mona goes to the general and the ruler of the city and tells them that the burden of saving the city should have never fallen to her. That so many adults had failed to step in and do the right thing, and she’s the one that paid the price. You don’t often see that in YA books, and I really liked that perspective - because she’s right.

The voice actress did an amazing job with all the voices and making the characters come to life!
